What is Silence?

As the film will be a silent movie. I felt a need to expand my imagination when it came to silent films, as this is something new to do and will mean I have to explore into silent films. First I will look at the meaning of ‘silent’ and interpret it many ways.

Sleep

Bored

Thinking

Peace of mind

Absence of noise

Tension

Is it even possible to attain ‘silence’?

Way I think about it is that, there can never be ‘silence’ some type of sound will always surround us.
If a whole family in a house is asleep. There may be silence in our case but is there really silence, when there are little sounds in the background of traffic, cars and horns, birds, animals, rain, and wind, sound of computers or buzzing. But I would see this as silence, as there is silence in the house even if there are background sounds. It’s still silent to me, the way I think of it.
So, the way I see it, most of us don’t actually know what silence is, some claim it’s the absence of sound but how many of us have actually experienced that completely, even the sound of yourself breathing in the most remote place would break the ‘silence’. My interpretation of silence, is the lack of sound, it’s experiencing less sound then usual, reaching a quiet and peaceful level where sound is at its minimal.

Our first meeting - looking at fast edits

This clip is research on fast edit scenes which we as a group shared an interest in. we liked the style of fast edits and noted that as an idea or aspect of the film that we wanted to look more into.

i decided to look into films which contained fast edits/transitions and use them for inspiration on style of editing

WHY FAST EDITS?

We understood that the them of 'the fall' means at some point, their is a stumble, a downfall. focussing on this part, means it will have to be effectively shown, audience should be able to feel the stumble, the fall of the character or situation. one way we understood the tension and heat of the moment of the stumble and fall can be portrayed is through fast editing, as it speed up you mind, your thoughts etc, wheras slow edits allow you to be more relaxed. therefore i researched into fast edits to give me a clear insight as to how the fast editing style can be done, what moments do they begin to pace up and at which moments wil it slow down.

Robert Lepage Cinematography

In this trailer of 'The Far side of the Moon', you can already gain a clear understanding of what the film is and the theme of it, the switch from reality and to space is present through the trailer. e.g. when the camera zooms into the pregnant lady's belly, after so, the next thing we see is an astronout attached to a lead, and it looks exactly like a baby attached to an unbilical cord.

Interesting things around the school based into the theme of the fall

final media - Slideshow

The point of this task was again to extend my skills on cinematography, to learn how to edit images to look like something deep and meaningfull. I experiemented and looked at normal basic objects around the school and thought how it can be made into an interesting story, something detailed, with meaning in every shot. something that can be made even with limited resources and guidence into something great with the creativity of our own minds.

This task allowed me to think about how when i make my film i should be aware that there wil be limitations and at times where resources are short or limited i have to learn to make ado, but making ado does not mean to give up, it means to work with what im given and devleop, and be creative with what i have, so i can apply this to times where when i get my location, i can look around, and look at things in detail, test and experient on how i could angle shots, or take certain shots or subjects in the shots and make them interesting.

Cinematography - Images based around the theme of the fall

Our task was to now develop our images by using a model to create a stream of images that tell a story. this story is to have a touch of the theme of the fall and contain a housestyle throughout.

My images show the story of the change of one person into two different people.
He starts of as a smart intelligent but nerdy looking character who then falls into a state of confusion where he then exits this character into the opposite kind, a ganster, rebel looking person. he has 'fallen' from one character to another. this falling effect is expressed through the lighting where at the start it is bright but sepia toned, however becomes darker as we get nearer to the end. symbolising a fall from good to bad. the lighting in the 3rd picture is half bright half dark to show the mid point, the point at which the change takes place from the old charater into the new character, which is demonstated as a big mistake when the lighting gets darker, dark like a pitt, to show how deep down this character has fallen into.

Cinematography - Turning everyday onjects into something else or something interesting

This slide relates to our research and planning. this task enabled me to interact with my creative side and to be open minded about casual things. our task was to picture everyday things we see in our house or outside and record is via still cameras. However, we had to capture an image with our own ability to interpret and see it as something that is not what it is 'everyday'. E.g, picture 1, which you will see shortly, will look like many spots of lights, almost like a tall building at night. what it really is.....

...is the reflection of a basket on my window ledge!!!

Thes photos have helped me to understand the importance of the way shots are taken and that when i make my film i should look out for ways to get my film acros interestingly and not ordinarily, make it something that hasn't been seen before and i intend to apply these skills of cinematography to my film.

What is the Fall? What does it mean to me?

WHAT IS THE FALL? What does the Fall mean to you? To others? What have artists before you done on this theme?

The fall in my eyes could ne interpreted as the season ‘fall’, where the weather changes, a fall in temperature, the fall of leaves from trees.

When i think of the fall i think of falling in love and the opposite to, falling out of love.

- When you think about Falling in love, it seems weird as falling out of love would make more sense. Falling in love, can be interpreted as an accidental stumble into it, but the saying is not a bad thing, its just a figure of speech. So therefore this interpretation of the fall is good and bad and to fall is not necessarily meaning something bad. As to fall in love is like an elevation in your life.
Famous celebrities have fallen into troubles like Amy Whinehouse and Rehab, due to her intoxicant addiction. Likewise George Michael, crashed into a shop under the influence of drugs and sentenced to 8 weeks in prison. Lindsy Lohan another big celebrity that stumbled as a Hollywood star into a jail sentence. This is another interpretation of falling.

Basic ideas of the fall are falling ill, falling asleep, the fall of rain/snow.

Other things that i relate ‘the fall’ to are songs.
- One song in particular, ‘Alicia keys – Fallin’

This song is about her falling in and out of love. But the video showed the image of her emotionally ‘falling’ repeatedly throughout.

The types of shots are a lot of the times high angles. Where she looks up to the camera as if she’s already fallen. Another image of her ‘falling’ is through her positioning and body language, she’s sitting a lot of the time, showing she’s reached the bottom, a low level, she’s ‘fallen’ to it. Other images of the fallen effect is created through the papers falling off the table.

In other shots shes sitting ina surrounding of fallen papers on the floor. her body language is in a half layed down position on the couch as if she has fallen.

Other interpretations of the fall that came to mind are, falling down, death (the fallen), the fallen soldiers over time. For example.
Disabled by Wilfred Owen a famous war poet. He wrote many poems and what became really significant to me was how his poetry described and created imaginations of the soldiers falling to their death, falling to their illnesses e.g. trench foot and diseases or conditions which are described in one of his poems ‘exposure’ (http://www.poemhunter.com/wilfred-owen/poems/page-2/ ).

The fact that a lot of the poems are in the location of the trench gives us the imagery of a deep hole that they have stumbled into, symbolically showing their fall to their death.

One poem i would like to show of his is Disabled

He sat in a wheeled chair, waiting for dark,
And shivered in his ghastly suit of grey,
Legless, sewn short at elbow. Through the park
Voices of boys rang saddening like a hymn,
Voices of play and pleasure after day,
Till gathering sleep had mothered them from him.

About this time Town used to swing so gay
When glow-lamps budded in the light blue trees,
And girls glanced lovelier as the air grew dim,-
In the old times, before he threw away his knees.
Now he will never feel again how slim
Girls' waists are, or how warm their subtle hands.
All of them touch him like some queer disease.

There was an artist silly for his face,
For it was younger than his youth, last year.
Now, he is old; his back will never brace;
He's lost his colour very far from here,
Poured it down shell-holes till the veins ran dry,
And half his lifetime lapsed in the hot race
And leap of purple spurted from his thigh.

One time he liked a blood-smear down his leg,
After the matches, carried shoulder-high.
It was after football, when he'd drunk a peg,
He thought he'd better join. - He wonders why.
Someone had said he'd look a god in kilts,
That's why; and maybe, too, to please his Meg,
Aye, that was it, to please the giddy jilts
He asked to join. He didn't have to beg;
Smiling they wrote his lie: aged nineteen years.

Germans he scarcely thought of; all their guilt,
And Austria's, did not move him. And no fears
Of Fear came yet. He drought of jewelled hills
For daggers in plaid socks; of smart salutes;
And care of arms; and leave; and pay arrears;
Esprit de corps; and hints for young recruits.
And soon, he was drafted out with drums and cheers.

Some cheered him home, but not as crowds cheer Goal.
Only a solemn man who brought him fruits
Thanked him; and then enquired about his soul.

Now, he will spend a few sick years in institutes,
And do what things the rules consider wise,
And take whatever pity they may dole.
Tonight he noticed how the women's eyes
Passed from him to the strong men that were whole.
How cold and late it is! Why don't they come
And put him into bed? Why don't they come?

- This poem to me hugely relates to the theme of falling. The poem begins in day and ends at night. It shows the fall of day, the sun going down. This shows him falling into his situation, his disability whereas during the poem it describes his fall from his strong whole physique to his disability, (no legs, and no now one arm). He has fallen from his independent self to now a dependent person, he’s fallen in popularity with women etc. From this the idea of ‘Fall’ is the idea of things going downhill, no progression.

So how can this help me in my silent film?

- Well, what i noticed is that strong imagery and meaning in a story can be created through writing, through written words that are put in front of us to read. I also found that it is powerful as when u read it u understand it in your own effective way, as you can hear your own voice reading and creating a tone to the story. E.g., some poems have staggered structures, short verses and short words, harsh edgy words and a lack of soft ones, this creates an edgy effect and when u read it in a staggering non-rhyming tone to yourself, you understand the struggle the poet is creating in your mind. The staggering structure and language in Dulce et decorum Est shows the jerky march of soldiers in the mud.
This becomes a more effective and natural approach in creating authentic atmospheres in the readers mind. And the same approach can be used in silent films to portray the story more effectively.

It not only teaches that language can be used craftily but also it gives simple ideas that would be very helpful in areas such as cinematography. The theme of day falling into night, is a subtle yet effective way in which THE FALL can be shown.
In disabled, the man once stood on his own two feet but now sits in a wheel chair. The fall in height shows his fall in his ability to his disability, these comparisons of before and after are significant in portraying, a ‘fall ‘.

CINEMATOGRAPHY in 'The fall' by Tarseem Singh

CINEMATOGRAPHY IN THE FALL DIRECTED BY TARSEEM SINGH

Tarsem Singhs' 'The Fall', 3 wins (Austin Film Critics Award, Berlin International Film Festival: Crystal Bear - Special Mention, Sitges - Catalonian International Film Festival: Best Film) & 3 nominations

What is the fall about?

‘In a hospital on the outskirts of 1920s Los Angeles, an injured stuntman (Pace) begins to tell a fellow patient, a little girl with a broken arm (Untaru), a fantastical story about 5 mythical heroes. Thanks to his fractured state of mind and her vivid imagination, the line between fiction and reality starts to blur as the tale advances’.

What does the fall mean to me?

The fall is a spectacular film.
The film exceeds the average creativity of everyday films. It is unique in its cinematography the absolute pureness of the shots and frames which is stunning to the eye. When i watched the film i was honestly blown away by the legit scenery, it was visually pleasing and explored deep into my imagination. It was something very different to me, and to know that there was no CGI used made the film so authentic, it brought the storytelling theme of the film to life and is to me a film with status. The film had a very special touch to it, it was made specially crafted to feed me imagination, creativity and entertainment on another level.

Montage of the fall...MUST WATCH!

The film is so successful in its cinematography it has achieved the same effects with multitudes’ of viewers...

“THE FALL takes multiple viewing to be made aware of all the connections in telling this story. I think the reason for this is that the visuals and cinematography are so mind blowing that audiences are not accustomed to such imagery. I've seen the film now at least 10 times and always am finding something new.” (review source: imdb.com)

Similar themed films.

Bedtime stories (2008), directed by Adam Shankman, 1 win (BMI film & TV awards) & 5 nominations
A family comedy about a hotel handyman whose life changes when the lavish bedtime stories he tells his niece and nephew start to magically come true.

Where the wild things are (2009) Directed by Spike Jonze
Nominated for Golden Globe. Another 22 nominations

‘An adaptation of Maurice Sendak's classic children's story, where Max, a disobedient little boy sent to bed without his supper, creates his own world of a forest inhabited by ferocious wild creatures that crown Max as their ruler.’

These are all similarly themed films with that bedtime story approach. There all imaginative and unique in its own ways. Bedtime stories is more mainstream and comedic and is filled with effects and an entertaining string of events, whereas The fall is not only imaginative in the storyline and plots but imaginative in the visions it creates for its viewers, a breathtaking vision of the story that we can not only hear but can see.
Where the wild things are carries again its own uniqueness. The fact that its adapted from a classic childrens story. It has this ancient and authentic touch to it.
The film brings it from a book into a “more brilliant, modern and fantastical” story – Maurice Sendak.
